About time!
Funny enough, last week I was thinking: Ken Wilber should -really- go on Oprah or something, and get the general public's attention. What's he got to lose? And sure enough....
Next step? An aired episode with Oprah. :)
Ken's Oz Interview
It was great Ken had an opportunity to do the interview with Oz. But it's clear (and Oz is no dummy) that the reception or "hearing" of the Integral vernacular has nothing to do with how smart or evolved someone is. It has to do with using language, concepts and examples that moves across a broad spectrum of the population so that a great number of folks can "hear" what is being said. I suspect that it will be up to others to take on this challenge. In any event, it was nice to hear Ken's voice on this show. It will be equally as nice to hear the collective Integral voice come forward and capture the public's mind with clear, easy to understand examples, metaphors, aphorisms, chunked-out, not dummed down presentations of what is one of the most important consciousness developments of our time.
I totally agree. I think
I totally agree.
I think this post will come off sounding negative, but Ken Wilber will never be on the Oprah Winfrey show. Never.
To be frank, I think it is a big mistake to attempt to bring the "Integral Message" to the "viewing public" via Ken Wilber or the Integral Institute. Going beyond new agers, open minded software engineers, neo-hippies, young buddhists, etc., will require new voices in new packages. And the voices won't be talking about stages of cognitive development or epistemological pluralism.
I hope Ken and I-I continue all the work they are doing. It is truly crucial to a better future for all sentient beings. In fact, I may end up in Boulder next year, and hope to become more involved with I-I. It just seems clear to me that this work, that is, the theory, should be allowed to spread organically, and not be pushed into the mainstream--as if it could really take root there.
It's much more likely that Oprah viewers will use an integrally informed exercise program than have an interest in understanding why a team of Integrally informed authors came out with 3 different exercise programs aimed at different value meme groups.

twas inevitable and is just the beginning
Ken's Oz interview.
Great (as always) to hear Ken.
The 'density' of his ideas needs a listener who has enough interest and goodwill to stop doing the washing-up or whatever and listen intently. Also, Ken's concepts can tend to seem rarified or irrelevent unless gleaned in a wide context of the other ideas (vast perspective!) and terms can come across as 'jargon'.
A movie or DVD would seem a good idea. Al Gore's example of 'An Inconvenient Truth' got his message across well, but I'd guess that the proportion of the population receptive to Al Gore's ideas, would be far greater (Maslow's Triangle - 'Survival' level) than Ken's (around 'Self-Actualisation' level).
The metaphor of 'matching impedance' in electronics (ie. 'like-mindedness' between speaker and listener) comes to mind.
Happy holiday to all :-)
Matching Impedance
Matching Impedance is the best metaphor I've heard in, umm, in weeks.
Aren't there also devices that measure impedance (spectrums) by rapidly scanning all frequencies?
Also, great interview Ken!
Happy holidays all.
The Integral Enlightenment
now i would like to see Ken Wilber and Michael Dowd dialoque....
Whole interview
Where can i listen to the whole interview
the feminist, ecological,
the feminist, ecological, and civil rights movements are the narcissists here??
the 'relativist pluralist' / 'mean green meme' is possibly the worst sociological concept ever. simply because of the absurdly large lack of historican and psychological correctness.
wilber becomes steadily worse... the only thing worth reading of his is the bibliography in whatever rehash book so non-gracefully written.
i'm sorry, but there are so so many things wrong with the I-I and the whole wilber approach. it's not that i want to be a hater on wilber, and i still think he had a good thing going for a while, but the inward and onward on itself turning tide of integral interia is really only good for the kind of laugh that everywhere escapes the holy quad. (can this only mean one thing about my psychological development? oh well...)
i hope you have other sources kids!
enjoy your off day in the second tear.
Evaluation and Careful stepping
I indeed see Integral thought as the most cutting-edge and comprehensive system of our times. And I understand what some of the previous posts are saying, that the Mainstream is not ready for Ken Wilber's grand vision. But please realize, that Wilber is well aware of that, and remember how long Ken has avoided interviews or contact with the mainstream largely due to fear of misinterpretation(which is abundant).
It's a courageous move to approach the mainstream, and that alone should call for admiration. Nevertheless, I know, and I know that I-I knows the mainstream will not get it, simply because the audience or in Wilber's words (quadrivium) is an important part in communication. Most people will interpret Wilber as New Age, or elitist, the depth that's required to read and understand Wilber's books is around teal. Most of us when we were faced with Wilber's seemingly caustic comments about the Greens still tend to believe that it's possible to reach a wider audience simply by rephrasing a little, avoid using jargons, and so on. (and I must mention I was one of them). Unfortunately, describing integral vision to an average citizen is like conveying Einstein's general relativity in full math mode! it's seriously frustrating experience. (Try it!) I know, I know, there's always possiblity that 10 years later they are going to reconsider your message and possilby move up in consciousness...being positive is always good. :)
Misinterpretation will be abound, i'm afraid. Just imagine how many people are going to claim that their level of consciousness are at the turquoise level...people still can't escape the feeling that they are being looked down upon when the Structure-stages notion is introduced. And many of them will believe in a kind of instant enlightenment package, I can only imagine someone saying, "so if i do this, I can move up from blue to Turquoise in a weekend, right?) And what about nihislism, acosmism?
Skillful means, skillful means. Too many misinterpretations are bound to happen...
