IN PodcastAlanis Morissette - From Jagged Little Pill to Flavors of Entanglement (click here for free 10 minute sample)

Seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette takes us on a tour of her life and career by sharing how the threads of her life have increasingly come together into one integral tapestry—where once there may have been jagged fragments, we can now see conscious and playful entanglement with all of life….

Alanis Morissette is one of those rare souls who has been brave enough to live, learn, and grow in the public eye, over the course of eleven albums, starting with Alanis, when she was just seventeen.  Now, with her latest albumFlavors of Entanglement—near completion (no release date yet, sorry!), Alanis and Ken explore how her personal and professional life has increasingly reflected an integral impulse towards embracing as much of the human experience as possible.  In one of the many light and humorous moments of this dialogue, Alanis shares that she gets bored hanging around with people who have less than a "multi-tentacled" approach—truly one of the most original, and funny, ways we've ever heard someone express their understanding an integral life.

One of the fascinating elements of this dialogue is that the discussion of Alanis's personal and professional life meshes into one unified story.  Her art is a reflection and expression of who she is, who she has been, and who she'd like to be—truly an astonishing feat, given that most of what the music industry produces is a superficial shimmer of human drama and emotion, not the deep, complex, and passionate narrative that life really is.  As Ken shares, Alanis recently told him that she thought her purpose "was to connect the human and the divine," a remarkably succinct summary of what art has the power to do, and, indeed, is one of its highest purposes.

Alanis, with a laugh, says she's "always had a little love affair with God," although, she reflects, God is also the first thing to go when she gets stressed.  Here, Alanis and Ken both share their deep appreciation for the role that shadow work can have in helping one have a clearer connection with ever-present Spirit, and also in just leading a happier, healthier life.  Ken goes on to mention that, in today's world, "God has a serious PR problem."  The mainstream media simply doesn't know the difference between contemplative, liberating, "experience it for yourself" spirituality, and dogmatic, mythic, "believe the Word or you're going to hell" spirituality.  Alanis, needless to say, is a radiant example of a spirituality that transforms, a spirituality that you feel and breathe and touch, where one is connected directly to the center of this conscious and living Kosmos

"I still find myself in certain circles of people who have just one focal point, and I usually glaze over after a while—if it's not a multi-tentacled approach to something, it's probably time to leave!"

Crikey, this is too fawning

Crikey, this is too fawning for me. Perhaps there is actually some good material here, but I'm put off investigating it by this post sounding like an agent's press release.

Seriously?

Alanis Morissette? Seriously?

We are to bow down at the feet of this new pop guru?

I suppose she falls under the "world's greatest artists" category. Seriously? Put her right up along side Beethoven, Coltrane, Mozart, et al? I don't think so, sorry.

...Alanis is great.

And Hardly new. Mozart? nah. More like a lyrical shakespear. Alanis has been around for years (making it big in 1995. putting out the highest selling debut album ever.)
Seriously look up lyrics to her songs: Uninvited, still, front row, baba, wunderkind.
She is amazing.

hah.

Alanis is one of the few truly talented artists out in this world today. She is known as a monumental female artist, and she has done enough in her career to be considered one of the best. @Joechip: wtf? They've done amazing things, but thats like comparing today's cars with a horse and buggy--it doesn't compare correctly. Plus, She's hardly new, maybe once again compared to Beethoven, but were you there to bow to him when he was playing for the royalty? Nah, didn't think so. Alanis has been in the business since 1987. She's so much better than all the "artists" of today that are the ones you should really be worried about.

Did she learn to play guitar yet?

Serious. Did she learn to play guitar yet? She always pretends to play and they turn her volume off. Stupid! Madonna can play better than her and that is not saying much. I am a traditional musician since the age of 5. I was told to practice not rely on a man to write a song for me.

Who is Katya comparing to Alanis?

For the ones who says Alanis is nothing comparing to Beethoven etc, I ask if any nowadays artists can be so. Why the hell is expected so much from Alanis if many others are only enjoying the fame while they're pretending they're are gifted. Alanis has shown to the whole world how she is becoming a great-spirited woman through the years. Who the hell is Katya? Someone who thinks she has style? Someone who thinks she is a great artist? Someone who thinks she did enough so she has the right to criticize Alanis?

Wahoo!

Wow. The haters of Alanis Morissette...I can not believe that you think you may insult such a talented woman. Look at all the music today, crap. I'm sorry but it's going downhill very fast. There are a few of those artists who still want to use music to express realistic feelings and emotions. Alanis may have released one of the greatest albums ever made, Jagged Little Pill. However, I disagree very much. Though Jagged Little Pill may have been the greatest selling album that she has ever released, I believe all the albums she has made have progressed, becoming better and better. Please stop criticizing her because whatever you have to say...just really isn't true and important.
Thanks
